This photo from 1890 shows Athens and the Acropolis. What is now a city of roughly 8 million souls was really a simple village. You can see that the roof of the Parthenon is missing (and still is). This happened accidentally in 1687 when, during a war between the Turks and Venetians, when the temple was used as an arsenal. Gunpowder explosion. And so it goes.
