The downtown restaurant and bar makes up for its lack of ambience with plenty of tradition and a diverse and colorful clientele. With its bright lights and  Formica-topped card tables and mirrors adorn most of the walls, it has been a San José trademark for a century.

Paulina Torres told Radio ADN 90.7 FM that she and nine other female friends, including her girlfriend, arrived last Saturday night.

Torres said they were told they could not kiss in the restaurant. The women complained, saying the restaurant was being discriminatory. A waitress responded by saying that it was company policy.

Torres is a coordinator for the Beso Diverso (Diverse Kiss), an event where gay and straight couples kiss in public in support of gay rights.

Today, Saturday at 5:30PM members of Beso Diverso will march from the Plaza de La Cultura to Bar Chelles to protest the restaurant's policy.

Marjorie Blanco of Bar Chelles told the press that the women should not expect an apology.

“What they did is extremely forbidden, this is a decent place,” she said. “Apologies for nothing, if I see a pair of women kissing each other, then I'm telling them to go elsewhere. The Lord rebukes the devil.”
