An influential Muslim cleric in Iran, Abdollah Javadi-Amoli, has described homosexuals as ‘worse than dogs and pigs’.
And he has condemned western politicians who pass laws decriminalizing gay sex.
The scholar, based in Iran’s holy city of Qom, is quoted from a speech by Persian news website Khabaronline, translated by the British Guardian newspaper’s Iran Blog.
‘Even animals... dogs and pigs don't engage in this disgusting act [homosexuality] but yet they [western politicians] pass laws in favor of them in their parliaments,’ he is reported as saying.
Interpreting Koranic verses about the prophet Lot, who some scholars say was punished by god for sodomy, he says: ‘If a society commits a new sin, it will face a new punishment. Problems like AIDS did not exist before.’
Homosexuality is illegal in Iran and punishable by death although the authorities sometimes label the offence as another crime to avoid criticism from the west.
The Guardian reports that the Iranian parliament has recently changed the law so someone playing an ‘active’ role in gay sex will be flogged 100 times, provided the sex was consensual and he was not married, but the 'passive' partner will still be put to death.
